Please stop the casting call for curiosity. Nearly every job description I have come across asks for a “curious thinker.” In the multitude of applications casting this character, the whimsy of the word is quickly losing its sparkle and being flattened to a 2 dimensional trait. My case is for the death of the overused and flat descriptor. Your applicants are looking to be more than that. Like intentionally inquisitive. The ones who know boredom is for the boring and are wayfinders to the interesting.
Ask for more. Call for the empathic nomad. The ones not only willing to wander but with the capacity to imagine what that world could feel like on any given day. Call for the intellectual investigator, someone who reasonably knows what leads to follow. The gumshoe type, a detective following leads, ear to the ground and willing to spend long nights on a stakeout when hot on a trail. Call for an interrogator both of mistakes and opportunities. Call for the ones who toe the line of cynic and zealot. Ask for the the disquisitive, analytical or discerning, just please end the search for the “curious.”
